Mineral: | Fergusonite-(Y) | Chemical Formula: | YNbO4 ((Y.45REE.37U.05).87(Nb.90Ta.08Ti.02) 1.00O3.64(OH).36) | Size: | | Weight: | | Transparence: | | Quantity: | | Origin: | Sakangyi area, west of Mogok, Shan State, Burma (Myanmar) | A true rarity for all collectors of radioactive minerals, this is a fine tetragonal fergusonite crystal with attached twin crystals. One end shows a crystalline fracture while the other is flat terminated. The emitted radioactivity dosage for gamma particles is 2,8 µSv/h and include beta and alpha particles 8,2 µSv/h.
Those prismatic tetragonal shaped crystals form at temperatures around 575 – 765°C otherwise they don’t disclose a crystal habit. This specimen is fairly big and terrific shaped for this mineral species. A rare specimen from the Sakangyi area.
